Also in attendance at the afternoon tea were His Excellency, Jeffrey Bleich, US Ambassador to Australia, together with his wife, Rebecca; as well as celebrity chef and author, Dominique Rizzo, and renowned gardener, Meredith Kirton.
Simon Cant and Kate McClure from Treasury Wines welcomed guests and introduced us to a selection of wines, including the Lindeman’s Early Harvest range, Wolf Blass Grey Label, Rosemount Regional Showcase Chardonnay, Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir, Penfolds Bin 2 and 28, and Greg Norman Cabernet Merlot. As we mingled, sampled the wines and chatted, we enjoyed superb duck pancakes and other tasty little morsels.
It was an honour for me to meet His Excellency, Jeffrey Bleich and his wife Rebecca. The Bleichs have a flourishing Victory Garden at the US Embassy in Canberra, modelled on the Victory Garden established by the First Lady, Michelle Obama, at the White House. Marigolds bloom among the vegetables, herbs and fruits, which include strawberries, watermelon citrus and crabapple, Mrs Bleich explained. There is also a Victory Garden at Floriade, presented by the Australian War Memorial. The plantings are reminiscent of the produce grown by Aussie families and Garden Armies as part of the 'Grow Your Own campaign' during WWII.
The award winning Lindeman’s Open Garden complements this year’s Floriade theme, A Feast for the Senses, with cooking demonstrations, wine tastings and the hugely popular hanging basket tree (great fun, do give it a go!). Floriade runs through until Sunday 16 October, so there is ample time to sample the Lindeman’s Early Harvest or Sweet Seasons range. As a bonus, on Saturday, 15 October and Sunday, 16 October, the lovely Dominique and Meredith will present light and luscious recipes, and tips on how and what to grow during Spring. Dominique is deeply passionate about using quality fresh produce and this is reflected in her recipe style. Meredith enthusiastically shares her lifelong commitment to gardening and horticulture.
