'Eat your greens too, darling one,' I suggest to my Peter in a gentle, mother hen fashion. Sometimes he forgets about them and then they've gone cold, which seems to give him the perfect excuse to push them to the side of the plate.

‘We are the everyday biscuit capital of the world,’ says Nigel Slater in Eating for England: the Delights & Eccentricities of the British at Table. ‘What France is to cheese and Italy is to pasta, Britain is to the biscuit. The tin, with its tight lid and cute pictures, is a playground for those who like their snacks sweet and crisp and reeking of tradition. Welcome to the British biscuit tin.’ Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold. Pease porridge in the pot, nine days old. It's such a delight to be back in my kitchen after being away from home for several weeks galavanting across the UK and Europe. Spring has arrived in Australia, the days are gradually getting warmer and the sunshine now streams in through every window and French door in the house. My inner child is jumping with joy. ♥ Saffron buns and lardy cake were at the top of the 'wish list' of good things I wanted to taste while travelling in the United Kingdom. To my huge delight, saffron buns featured on the shelves of numerous patisseries and bakeries. My favourites would be found at (Rick) Stein's Patisserie in Lanadwell Street, Padstow – fortuitously right opposite the inn where we were staying. Suffice to say I called in there often. The last two items packed into my carry-on luggage ahead of our recent adventures were a brand new cloth-covered note book and a favourite ballpoint pen. I made a promise to myself that I would put words on paper at the end of each day – keeping a journal of our travels and investing time in the enjoyable process of writing. |
