If you happened to watch ABC's breathtaking series, Great Southern Land recently, you will have learned that Australia eats the most beetroot in the world, and exports 70,000 tonnes of rice per year. On a continent with just 6% of precious arable land, we support almost 23 million people, and 120,000 farms produce almost everything we eat! In episode one, titled Great Australian Bite, Professor Steve Simpson, explored how we satisfy an appetite for two of life’s vital ingredients: food and power - as seen from above. Simpson set off on a journey to unravel the network of food production by tracing the ingredients of a humble Australian burger, travelling from Roma in Queensland to Adelaide; from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and to Queensland’s Glass House Mountains. Viewers were taken from the stunning Snowy Mountains, to Tasmania, south west Victoria, Lake Macquarie in NSW, Burdekin in Queensland and the outback of Western Australia.
Seen from above how a vast nation is fed and powered is an eye-opening adventure... this is Australia as you’ve never seen her before! The four-episode series of Great Southern Land is available on Blu-ray and DVD from 21 November and I have TWO copies of the DVD valued at $29.95 each to give away! Capital Region Farmers Market in Canberra will always be my favourite, Lizzy. The market has opened a whole new world to my family and I. As a stall holder, it has given us an amazing opportunity to share the world of bees and honey with the people of Canberra. As a customer and patron of the market it gives my family and I access to superb seasonal fruit and vegetable that we don't find anywhere else :-) 10/11/2012 08:40:44 am

the Inverell Sapphire City Markets are great - only on once a month but always a treat in a small country town.

I saw some tweets about your competition .. would love to win this as a pressie for my parents, in Australia. I am currently travelling and my favourite Farmers Market at the moment is the Dupont Circle Fresh Farm Markets. They are a producer only market - I found them when walking around and they reminded me of the Markets at the Rocks in Sydney - I used to go there with my parents as a child. You can check them out at: http://www.greentowns.com/initiative/farmers-market/dupont-circle-fresh-farm-market-washington-dc

I really like the Markets at Epic in Canberra. It has a good atmosphere and even though it gets really busy there is lots of space so its never super duper crowded.

The best farmers markets by far are none other than Bathurst Farmers Markets! The Grafton Farmers Market always has people milling around early. Being a Thursday morning, you can see people dropping by to get their wonderful local produce on their way to work or even just buying flowers to liven up their office. Its great to see Market Square once more being a market place for local farm produce as it was early last century. 20/11/2012 09:07:28 pm
The Capital Regional Farmers Markets are the best in Australia!!

Bannockburn market in Victoria is fantastic, excellent produce, amazing people, and a very vibrant market. I love speaking to the stall holders about their produce, where it has come from and the method of growing / making. They are always very happy to chat and pass on their secret!

Would love to enter but given our closest farmers market is 800kms away it is a bit hard. Wish we were lucky enough to live close to one. We kill our own meat, grow veg etc but would be great to have access to have more via markets Comments are closed.
