During a major overhaul of my kitchen utility drawers recently, I found a number of cook's tools made from silicone, most of which were buried in the back of the unit under piles of other utensils. Continuing the themed style of my last couple of In My Kitchen posts, I thought I'd showcase a few of those silicone items here. Regular readers of Good Things will be familiar with my friend Celia's In My Kitchen round up that she hosts on her blog. Fig Jam and Lime Cordial. Cooks and food bloggers from around the world take their readers by the hand and lead them into the kitchen for a fun show and tell segment. It's always interesting to see what's cooking across the other side of the world, and even in my own neighbourhood. So, in my kitchen I the funky silicone basting brush from Chef'n, pictured above. I was fortunate enough to win an entire set of utensils in this range. Green is one of my favourite colours, I love it, don't you? Also in my kitchen are these moulds for poaching eggs (below). I bought them as a gift for Peter when we were still dating. Also in shades of green, you will note. Have you ever used these? A recent purchase from Zazz is this heatproof oven glove, one of a pair. There are silicon strips along both sides of the glove, as you can see. I've been using them for a few weeks now and so far so good. Another relatively recent purchase is this spatula, pictured below. One of my favourite plastic spatulas split just recently, so I bought a new one, as you do. Can you ever have too many good spatulas? I think not. This balloon whisk is an absolute favourite in my kitchen. Not only do I love the bright colour, but it accomplishes each task assigned to it with precision. Another couple of 'eggy' tools, these silicon egg rings work well, or so my Peter tells me! Peter came home from the shopping centre one day ages ago with two packets of these star-shaped moulds. He thought they would come in handy. I think I used them once for a sweet dish. The white spots don't seem to want to come off them! And last but certainly not least is this basting brush which is one of my most used tools. It's dishwasher safe too! Do you like using silicone utensils, dear readers? What about the egg poachers? Have you tried those? What are your favourite cook's tools and what's happening in your kitchen at the moment?

Hi Sally, I must confess that I have not used to poacher things... looking forward to seeing your kitchen!

Hi Padaek... how lovely!
Lizzy

Hi Francesca... I must confess I have not used those egg poachers... must do so!
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:27:16 pm
Hi Amanda, they are really good and wash well too! 31/7/2014 01:08:34 pm
That's a lot of silicon and so many pretty colours. It's amazing what you find when you clean out your utensil drawers. I have one of those basting brushes and use it all the time xx
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:27:37 pm
Hi Charlie... yes, it is, isn't it! Must keep those drawers tidier! 31/7/2014 01:18:43 pm
I also have a silicone pastry brush and it is brilliant. :-)
Lizzy

Hi Krista, they are good, aren't they!
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:28:39 pm
Hi Glenda, I have yet to try the basting brush, but the blue brush is brilliant! 31/7/2014 04:16:35 pm
My hairdresser uses one of those gloves for when she is tonging hair! Nice haul Lizzy :)
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:28:52 pm
Good idea!

Hiya, I hope you're feeling better! Did you get some Rikodeine?!! 31/7/2014 04:44:36 pm
Silicone stuff works so well in the kitchen! I've eyed those poaching cups before, but figured they were something I really didn't need (if the whites of the poached eggs get too unruly I just trim them with scissors). Fun stuff this month -- thanks.
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:29:59 pm
That's interesting John... I have a confession... not only have I not used those poacher things, I have only poached an egg once.... not sure I like them too much! 31/7/2014 04:55:07 pm
what is with the little handles on the egg rings, lizzy? what do they do?
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:30:35 pm
Hi there... I think you use those to lift them off.... they are ok for pancakes too, for those who cannot make round ones! : )
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:30:53 pm
Hi Misky... hope you are well.... thanks for stopping by. 31/7/2014 11:33:16 pm
Lots of goodies indeed Liz! I do love my silicon spatulas, but have a real hate of those poach pod thingies. Too many times given eggs cooked in those at cafes instead my order of poached eggs- definitely not the same :) x
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:31:09 pm
Ah Bec, that is interesting to know, thanks!

Hi Nancy, that's interesting. Lizzy, I have such a mixed relationship with silicon! I ADORE silicon utensils (and now want a basting brush just like yours) but HATE silicon bakeware. I find anything I cook in the oven in silicon always comes out tasting steamed rather than baked. I love my silicon spatulas and recently went on a quest to find exactly the right shape, but haven't had much luck with the egg poachers - they've now become toys for all the small people who come and visit us! :) Lovely post darling friend.. xxx
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:32:24 pm
Hi Celia, they are great toys for little people, aren't they! I don't mind silicone bakeware... I have a loaf tin and a square one too... both good. That said, I do prefer traditional bakeware! xo
A spatula, my kingdom for a decent spatula. It's heartbreaking when your favourite spatula carks it, isn't it? Because, as my dad always says "as sure as God made little apples" you simply will not, ever, find the same spatula to replace it. I have about 8 spatula's and the only one I truly love is a Christmas themed one so it's packed away for 10 months of the year.
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:32:40 pm
LOL., it does! 1/8/2014 09:10:59 pm
I too did a clean out of my kitchen drawers today. I must admit that I have a lot of utensils, but I do like to use them all. The problem is that when they are jammed up the back of the drawer, I forget that I have them! I love those star moulds Liz, I could think of lots of sweet things to set in those :)
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:33:21 pm
Hi Taryn... I have so much stuff... at my age and when your parents and brothers die and you have their things, and then Peter had a stash of his own stuff too.... all too much really, though I love it all. 1/8/2014 09:14:48 pm
You make the silicon things look so desirable! I use my silicon spatula all the time and love my silicon brioche moulds, but that's it. I tried baking cakes in silicon and they just pushed the sides out - maybe I need to give it another go.
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:34:00 pm
Oooooh, silicone brioche pan... that sounds great! I have never had dramas with the cakes pushing the sides out... but I do line them with baking paper Anne. 2/8/2014 02:28:46 am
You picked nice colours for your kitchen, Lizzy! Thanks for sharing!
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:34:14 pm
Julie, that's very kind, thank you!
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:34:28 pm
Me too! Too many burns, ouch! 2/8/2014 12:23:31 pm
What a gorgeous palatte of colours Lizzy! I love the various tools for eggs - and how good are silicon spatulas, I couldn't live without my kitchenaid one.
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:34:55 pm
Mrs M it was my kitchenaid spatula that split... I cut it somehow... don't ask me how!
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:35:10 pm
Liz, thanks so much, interesting to hear that! 2/8/2014 02:43:24 pm
A good collection of useful and attractive silicon Lizzy! I love a good silicon spatula, I use silicon tipped tongs for certain jobs and also a basting brush. I am not really into poached eggs but anything to make cooking eggs easier and less messy is good I think. Happy cooking x
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:35:32 pm
Ah Jane, I don't like poached eggs either... but Peter does... : ) 2/8/2014 07:44:40 pm
I think I've used my egg poachers twice. You can never have enough spatulas. Thanks for the peek into your kitchen :)
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:35:48 pm
True, Tandy, you need a spatula for every job! 2/8/2014 11:33:38 pm
these things look very useful and colourful. I do love my silicone spatula; i use it for nearly everything. I have a silicone brush too but it never seems to work as well as my other hairy ones!:)
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:36:13 pm
Oh really? I do love my silicone brush. Thanks for stopping by. 3/8/2014 10:53:09 am
8 have so much silicon Lizzy, but I only ever use my spatulas. You can never have too many of those
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:36:23 pm
So true, Tania! 3/8/2014 09:54:51 pm
I love, love, love my silicon brush. I used to keep two separate bristle brushes - one for sweet, one for savoury but now I only need the one! And do easy to clean. Fun post Liz!
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:36:42 pm
So true, Fiona, I pop mine in the dishwasher! 4/8/2014 01:01:51 am
Another great IMK Liz! Loving your green and blue themed silicon utensils. I have always been intrigued with the silicone brush and really want one I'm just not sure - are they good for egg wash or mainly just for basting? Hope you have a beautiful week x
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:37:02 pm
Hi there... they are great for both jobs! I love mine!
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:37:22 pm
Thanks so much Emma... a balloon whisk is essential... I have four! 5/8/2014 01:33:58 am
I need to get some of those gloves. My hands are a train wreck. You have some great silicone gadets. I love my silicone utensils, especially my spatulas. I don't know have I ever scraped a bowl out before they were around.
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:37:42 pm
Hiya... check out Zazz for the gloves... they have them every so often! 5/8/2014 02:52:38 am
Liz, I enjoyed your silicon-themed post. Pretty colors! Haven't tried poaching eggs in cups -- do they slide out well? And, you knoooow I'm admiring your new oven mitt! ;)
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:38:10 pm
Hi Kim, truth be told I bought them for Peter when we were dating and I have never used them! Time I did, huh! 5/8/2014 07:04:39 pm
I'm not a huge fan of silicone, but I couldn't give you a reason why. I have those exact same egg poachers but never actually use them. I really should ditch them or pack them away. But I do think a good silicone spatula is so handy in the kitchen.
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:38:24 pm
So true Tania!

I have several sizes of spatulas along with cooking ladles that I love to use as they don't make a scratching sound on the pots when cooking. They are Red as that is my accessories colour for my kitchen. I also love wooden ones.
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:38:49 pm
Hi Lyn, lovely to hear from you... how nice that you have colour themed your kitchen tools! 9/8/2014 05:01:51 pm
I'm very interested in that oven glove, my oven cloth is nearly dead and I'm looking to replace it... do they have an online store? Liz x
Lizzy
9/8/2014 07:24:54 pm
Hi there Elizabeth... try https://zazz.com.au/ but they don't have the gloves every day... just once in a while... thanks for stopping by! : )
Lizzy
17/8/2014 02:39:07 pm
Hi Moya, me too, I love my silicone spatulas! 18/8/2014 01:30:57 am
Those egg poachers look like something I would love to try and they seem to have lasted the test of time. I have been learning to use a few silicone utensils in my kitchen as well....and love the green color. Comments are closed.
