'Speaking as someone who didn't go through the UK school system, with all the culinary baggage that entails, I am inordinately fond of custard in any shape or form.' - Yotam Ottolenghi on the rules of making custard A deliciously interesting conversation has evolved between myself and some lovely friends of mine, who are also food writers and dedicated cooks. It started on Twitter a few weeks ago when Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial and Mel from The Cook's Notebook were chit-chatting about Le Creuset enamelled cast iron cookware sets that Mel had spotted on 'sale' at her local newly-opened Costco. CorningWare is renowned world-wide for producing premium quality bakeware. First introduced in 1958, it's a brand that generally evokes fond memories of puddings and porridge and tuna mornay. And decades-old wedding presents that are still treasured and much used to this day. My father was a truly wise and wonderful man and, together with my mother, taught me and my siblings that 'charity begins at home'. That is, we learned about the mentality of loving kindness (as opposed to the misconstrued belief that you 'should always take care of your loved ones before anyone else in the world'). And this mindset has pretty much stuck with me throughout my life. Welcoming Australia's National Treasure, Margaret Fulton, to the cooking school on numerous occasions years ago was a real privilege and most memorable for me. For not only have I always admired Margaret's passion for cooking, but the dishes the lady prepared, and the gusto with which she prepared them, was nothing short of awesome! Once the first frost hits during winter in Canberra, it's time to reach for the long johns and snuggly blankets, and hibernate. Steaming hot soups are back on the menu, offering fuel and comfort food. So let's gather a few of my favourite ingredients, combine them with some hand-picked herbs and home-made stock, and let them simmer away until a delicious aroma fills the kitchen. SBS continues to lead the way with two deliciously tasty, brand new food series to captivate and delight on one big night. Shane Delia’s Spice Journey Turkey and Adam Liaw’s Destination Flavour Down Under, will premiere on 31 July to heat up the winter season of mouth-watering Thursday night food offerings only on SBS ONE. It's the Monday of the June long weekend in Australia and it's bitterly cold outside. In fact, I can even see sleet from where I'm sitting in the warmth of my library. I don't think I will be going out there any time soon, for my I broke my foot badly on Thursday evening. As such, I'm currently house-bound and my only means of transport is a knee scooter. The 2014 Canberra & Capital Region Truffle Festival begins on 21 June and I'm absolutely delighted to partner once again with Anne and Denzil Sturgiss from Tarago Truffles who have generously offered readers of Good Things the opportunity to WIN a truffle hunt for two during this year's season. A little birdie once told me that life in retirement from full time work would be busier than I could have ever imagined. I simply smiled and nodded, secretly dreaming about the relaxed, if not altogether-lazy, lifestyle that Peter and I were so looking forward to. Six months into it I can unashamedly tell that you I'm eating humble pie on this one. Bizzy Lizzy is busier than ever! |
