Once upon a time I knew a Greek gentleman who owned a 'fish and chip shop'. Some people thought of it as more of a 'hamburger joint' or 'steak house', while others referred to it lovingly as a 'greasy spoon'. The owner was a humble and kindly fellow, who worked hard, loved to philosophise, and was proud of the food and beverages that he served in what he referred to as his 'coffee lounge'. Lately, life at the Blue House has been deliciously interesting, if not just a little bit busy. We're settling into our retirement and making the most of each and every day. Of course, there's the mundane of daily life (minor illness, keeping fit, dieting, and so on), but in between that we've managed to squeeze in a bunch of outings and a few short getaways, too. Some delicious news from the team at the Capital Region Farmers Market in Canberra! As part of its tenth birthday celebrations this year, the Market is launching its very own cookbook. The Capital Region Farmers Market is the shopfront for the best food and wine that this region has to offer and the Capital Region Farmers Market Recipe Book showcases the market people, their produce and their passion for food. 'You need to make this salad!' Coming from my man, those words make my cook's heart sing. He's not really the salad type, you see, and the prospect of nagging him to eat his greens for the sake of his wellbeing doesn't sit well. But, every now and then we stumble upon a salad that he loves. And when that happens, I'm so there! Yesterday when I was young This weekend, Canberra's largest Home and Leisure Show features cutting edge innovations for home, leisure, outdoors, travel and gardening. There are more than 300 exhibitors, displaying and demonstrating the very latest technology, with a focus on home products. Strolling around the picturesque village of Berrima in New South Wales recently, Peter and discovered a delicious and quirky larder door, tucked away at the bottom of the stairs leading down from the main street. I'd like to introduce you to the store owners, chefs Veronica Stute and Justin Wells, a.k.a. Two Skinny Cooks. If you were to be granted three wishes and had the opportunity to experience a once-in-a-lifetime food enthusiast's adventure, tell me my friends, what would you wish to do? For me, I'd like very much to spend a day in the company of one of my food heroes, Yotam Ottolenghi. I imagine we'd sit and peruse Yotam's cookbooks over breakfast, to see what we might cook for the day. Then we'd go to the market and shop for star ingredients: sweet potatoes, pomegranates, feta, yoghurt, lemons, tomatoes, garlic, beetroot, peppers and aubergines, perhaps. Then together we'd cook an Ottolenghi feast, arranged on big beautiful platters. And then we'd eat. Sounds wonderful, no? On the subject of dessert, what say you, my friends? If you ask me, there's always room for a little bit of dessert, especially if it's ice cream — and even more so if it's ice cream that's on the exotic side. |
