From blossoms Blessings and thanks to Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, for providing so many poems celebrating food!
'Please take some, the cows are sick of eating 'em,' the stall holder said to me with a laugh, as he offered a kilogram of strawberries for just $5.00. 'Are you sure? I'm happy to pay full price,' I insisted, knowing that the good man had travelled some distance to sell his produce. He waved me away and handed over my prize, saying 'I'm sure, because you'll taste 'em, know how good they are and come back for more next week!'. With such a bargain and his genuine smile, how could I resist?!
'Good evening and welcome to Adelaide and Eat Drink Blog 2012. It's a pleasure to be here with you to indulge in and celebrate South Australia's premium food and wine. I want to offer a special welcome to those of you from interstate ... and acknowledge the extra effort you have made to be here. It demonstrates your commitment to connect as a blogging community and highlights your passion for food, wine and beer, which translates directly to what food and wine experiences are all about: a coming together a people... around the family table, a BBQ with friends, restaurants and wine tours or community events such as Farmer's Markets. It's a celebration of all that's good for the soul!'
With those enthusiastic words, and a clear passion for the good things that South Australia has to offer, the Hon. Gail Gago MLC, Minister for Tourism, welcomed Eat Drink Blog 2012 delegates at a dinner in Adelaide recently. The evening was just one of the highlights of an event packed weekend attended by some 80 food bloggers from across Australia. Tours of Adelaide's Central Market, Sunday morning breakfast and an onsite pop up lunch, as well as trips to The Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale, a writing workshop and an all day conference were also on the agenda. In my kitchen this month (and always) are free range eggs, fresh from the Capital Region Farmer's Markets. Unfortunately, I don't have space on my current block in suburbia to run chickens, so I barter for or buy my eggs. Rather than buying from a supermarket, I choose to buy eggs direct from the producer and don't mind paying more knowing that they have come from hens that are free range. If you'd like to know more about free range produce, visit the web sites for Animal Welfare Labels and Humane Choice.
After my adventures with #HumanBrochure in Canberra and Eat Drink Blog (#EDB2012) in Adelaide, two wonderful but HUGE weekends in a row, my body is telling me 'Whoa, hold the bus Freddie!!'
If you happened to watch ABC's breathtaking series, Great Southern Land recently, you will have learned that Australia eats the most beetroot in the world, and exports 70,000 tonnes of rice per year. On a continent with just 6% of precious arable land, we support almost 23 million people, and 120,000 farms produce almost everything we eat!
