Meet Audrey Gordon, 'food writer, teacher, celebrity chef and someone who loves to cook fresh food, prepared with love'; and host of Audrey's Kitchen, a new comedy cooking series on the ABC.
The publicity sheet advises that Audrey's Kitchen 'is an irreverent antidote to the crowded world of celebrity chefdom, a tongue-in-cheek send-up of the cult of TV cooking... a series for anyone who loves food but is willing to admit that we might all sometimes be taking it just a tad too seriously'. How true, and what fun! In three-minute segments, Audrey dishes up exotic recipes with whimsical spiel that includes 'whisking eggs till they are slightly giddy' and frying with a 'satisfying sizzle'. She compares snipping the ends off spring onions to 'docking a dog's tail' and answers questions such as 'Why do I cook' with the response, 'Why does a painter paint or a carpenter make carpet!'. Full marks to Australian actress, Heidi Arena, who stars as Audrey Gordon. She has the plum-in-the-mouth English accent down pat and is a little bit ‘Nigella’ and a touch Margaret Fulton and a dash of Hairy Biker thrown in for attitude. I can't wait to see Audrey on MasterChef! Catch a preview of the series here or watch ABC TV on Saturdays and Sundays at 6.25pm.

Episode One of Season Two of the popular SBS program, Gourmet Farmer with Matthew Evans, aired on Thursday, 25 August at 7.30pm. I have already booked regular seats on the living room sofa for the next little while and am looking forward to learning more about Matthew's life on Puggle Farm in Tasmania, with his partner, Sadie, and little son, Hedley.
I've always been fond of Matthew. The former SMH food critic also happens to be a great chef (ex-Canberra), a gentleman and just a down-to-earth, nice kind of guy. Having moved to Tassie, which many food enthusiasts revere as the land of milk and honey, Matthew turned his hand at farmer and experiencing all that goes with it. Gourmet Farmer follows his adventures from paddock to plate. Matthew was born in a mining town in southern Wales and moved to Canberra at the age of four. From about that time on, he says "he fell in love with food at [his] mother’s apron strings". Matthew is the author of eight books on food, including the authoritative Real Food Companion and his autobiography Never Order Chicken on a Monday. He writes regularly for Delicious, Feast and Grazia magazines, and shares a market stall, Rare Food, with his good mate Ross O’Meara, specialising in old and rare breed pork products, amongst other goodies. Maeve O'Meara introduced viewers to the culinary delights of France in the recent nine-part series of French Food Safari. Judging by the Twitter feed and commentary on the SBS Food web site, viewers loved the program and can't wait for the book and DVD. Though it was hard to choose, I think my favourite recipe was the Perigourdin Prune Flan. Such an indulgence!
