'Good food has never come from factory farms, process lines, canteens, supermarkets and fast food chains. It still belongs to careful vegetable gardeners, painstaking cheese makers and dedicated chef-patrons, meeting in the bustling market-place.'
— Michael Symons, One Continuous Picnic (Penguin)
'I feel like having hotcakes and fruit for breakfast after our swim,' I said to Peter as we walked hand-in-hand along the sandy shore of Laguna Bay. 'Do you now,' he replied, staring dreamily out to the blue on the horizon. And have them we did!
'My nanna always made Yorkshire pudding. I think it was to fill us up before we had the meat and vegetables. Back in those days, Yorkshire pudding was stodgy and made with beef or pork dripping. It's nice with roast beef, potatoes baked in their jackets, and carrots, peas and gravy.'
'I remember poffertjes from my childhood. My aunts made these golden balls of dough and served them with a lightly rose-scented sugar syrup as a special treat.'
Sunday at our place was a relaxed tracksuit, newspapers and blueberry hotcakes kinda day. We'd both been a little unwell through the week and, although some (kind) invitations had come our way, we declined politely and relished in having a day indoors all to ourselves.
I believe there's not enough down time these days and it's little wonder that so many people are tired much of the time, myself included. It's all crazy busy and go, go, go. Of course, it's fun to get out, socialise, see friends, meet new people and do things; but it's also ever so fine and dandy to simply kick back and have a pyjama day.

My mother and father often told me stories of how much their lives changed when they arrived in Australia, having fled Sátoraljaújhely after the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Some aspects of life for them as ‘New Australians’ changed for the better, while others took some getting used to.
"Yummy, I want to know how to do that," my friend 'The Dog' commented when he saw the cafe-style hotcakes I'd made for Peter's breakfast last weekend.
