Blood orange and raspberry spritzer AND a SodaStream giveaway

30/9/2014

Blood orange raspberry spritzer by Liz Posmyk Good Things
According to news reports on the ABC this morning, 2013 was Australia's hottest summer on record and 2014 is likely to be the same, if not hotter. With that in mind, I'm gearing up with a range of refreshing spritzers that are health-giving as well as thirst quenching and cooling.

We usually buy bottles of mineral water by the dozen, but thanks to the generosity of the people at SodaStream, Peter and I have a new SodaStream Drinks Maker sitting on our kitchen bench and have been enjoying fizzy water at the touch of a button. Powered, by a refillable CO2 canister, SodaStream Drinks Makers offer Australians a smart way to enjoy sparkling beverages transforming ordinary tap water into delicious carbonated drinks, cocktails and refreshing sparkling water in seconds.

So far, I've experimented with fresh lemon and lime juice with sparkling water, as well as a combination of cloudy apple juice with passionfruit juice and sparkling water (in preference to sweet syrups and cordials). The results have been delicious!

Our favourite so far is this blood orange and raspberry spritzer, my own creation, of course! My citrus grower friend, Len from Redbelly, has kept me well supplied with his beautiful oranges, so I see more blood orange spritzers on the horizon this season. Cin cin.

BLOOD ORANGE AND RASPBERRY SPRITZER
125g frozen raspberries*
200ml freshly squeezed blood orange juice, well chilled
200ml SodaStream soda water, well chilled
sliced blood orange and mint sprig, to garnish (optional)

Place the frozen raspberries in the jug of a blender. Add the well chilled blood orange juice and pulse until the fruit is pureed. Strain the mixture through a sieve, pushing the juice through into a chilled glass or jug. Discard the seeds. Top up with the fizzy water and serve.

* Buy them cheaply by the bag or freeze them in quantity at the peak of the season.

lizzie, thanks so much for your blog, I love having a good Canberra-based food blog. We returned to Canberra last year and live not far from you, so your local recommendations have been especially valuable for me.

I would love to have a soda stream. I make a lot of cordials and drinks - at this time of year, I have seville orange cordial, grapefruit cordial and lemon and ginger cordial - and I don't like all the plastic bottles that come with buying soda water to go with them.

Keep up the great work. Jenny

Hi Lizzy,
Love reading your blog!

I'd love a soda stream for summer! My favourite things to make with bubbly water (as my son calls it), are lemon, lime and bitters with lemon juice, lime cordial and soda, and fruit punch with ginger cordial, summer fruits, lemon and soda! Perfect for those sunny afternoons in the garden!

I would love a SodaStream Play Drinks Maker to make summer a little breezier and easier. I am thinking of summer sangria and campari by the pool, bubbly alcohol free fruit drinks, and all round, less sugary beverages.

We are planning an ocean voyage on our 48ft yacht which we are rebuilding. A soda stream would be ideal to save us carrying lots of plastic bottles specially once empty. I’d love lemon, lime or mango and would try other tropical fruits we would find on our travels.

Well currently I am trying to switch my husband over to eating and drinking more healthy foods. He drinks way too much soft drink at the moment and I think this would be a great way to transition to drinking much less sugar. He loves elderflower cordial so I think I would make a passionfruit and elderflower drink with soda water. Thanks for the opportunity!

Your homemade spritzer sounds great! We drink a lot of seltzer, too. We've thought about making it at home, but have been too lazy to try. But we probably should! Sounds like fun, and I'll bet it tastes wonderful.

Hi Liz,
I would love a Soda Stream to help survive our summer without having to lug bottles & cans of soft drink from the supermarket to keep my teenagers hydrated (they do drink water but variety is the spice of life!). Please save my back and wallet :)

I love your blog, Lizzy....for me, it is almost like having a history lesson about Australia. Being new to this country, I don't let go of a chance to watch programs or read anything pertaining to the history of this land and your blog is a true reflection of this country. Keep up the good work.

Coming to the soda stream, this is one appliance that immediately sparks of a spate of childhood memories for me. When a similar appliance was launched about 20 odd years ago in Dubai, I remember my mum buying one to cut down on our dependence of sugary fizzy drinks. All through the growing up years, I remember drinking plenty of fizzy beverages that she came up with like lemon mint spritzer, orange spritzer and a traditional Indian one which has lemon, a special herbal reduction, jaggery and pinch of salt. Now a chance of personally owning a soda stream here is really exciting as it would help me re-create many of these memories for my little one.

G’day Liz!
Don’t those Sodastream colours look wonderful. I can just imaging whipping up fizzy naturally sweet rockmelon water for a summer treat, or a rich vanilla cherry syrup all bubbled up. Will hopefully get to Young in a few weeks for some cherry picking, yum!

Your spritzer looks heavenly Lizzy.
Wow, sodastream machines have come a long way since we bought one about 483 years ago. We still have and use it.
Good luck to your entrants.
Have a super day.

Every time I'm at the shops, my son asks, 'Can we buy a Soda Stream'. So far I've resisted but they sure look like a great way to create cooling drinks over the summer xx

My Aunt babysat myself and my brother as kids after school. Each summer afternoon we could choose a sodastream flavour - brings back so many fond memories. I'd like one so my kids could experience this too. To keep tradition, the flavour choices would be up to the kids!

Hi Lizzy,
Since summer is coming, I would love to create a lovely summer and refreshing drink. It will have pineapple and mango and a bit of white wine to mix it up and with Sodastream magic it will be so popular at my housewarming party.

My husband had a Sodastream when he was a kid that he is always talking about, he thinks you can't be a kid without one! My daughter would just mix every different flavour together and be very happy!

Ooh, I've been thinking of getting a soda stream for a while now - when the weather is hot and the sun is shining we love to drink sparking water with a twist of lime, but I do feel guilty about the extra packaging. Soda Stream seems the ideal solution!

I have a garden full of fresh herbs and citrus fruit. I'd love to win a Soda Stream to make fresh drinks/mocktails for hot nights sitting out while having friends and neighbours round for a BBQ.

It would be my dream,
To win a Soda Stream.
I'd have fun reliving my childhood days,
When making up different drinks was loads of fun than a phase.
The Soda Stream would be great for entertaining,
And I will be refreshed when it's hot or raining.

Once when I was little, my father told me that to make fizzy drinks, the factory workers had to fart into the water. This put me off sugary fizzy drinks till I was at least 13! Now I know better and can educate my kids on how to enjoy healthy, home made fizzy drinks. They love summery fruits like mango, lychees, watermelon and coconut. I can think of a million amazing fruit combinations that will keep them as happy as larry! (or Lizzy!) For an adult twist I will add mint, lime or even a kick of chilli :)

We could ditch the bought bottles & use our endless filtered tap water! I grew up with Soda Stream at my best friend's place during the 70s but now my 'pop' flavours turn to the herbs we grow such as carraway thyme w lemon, mint w lime & vanilla, rosemary w raspberry...they all go with gin too!

WITH MY ELDEST SON BEING DIAGNOSED TYPE1 DIABETIC AGED 3, SUGAR-FREE SOFT-DRINKS ARE AN ESSENTIAL IN OUR HOUSEHOLD. HAVING OUR OWN SodaStream Play Drinks Maker COMBINED WITH THE SUGAR-FREE FLAVOURS, WOULD ENSURE SAFE, FRESH DRINKS ARE ALWAYS ON HAND!!

A SodaStream Play Drinks Maker would be just the delight to have on hand, to create fantastic mocktails such as the Halloween Witches Brew (2 parts SodaStream sugar free orange, 1 part SodaStream ginger ale, 1 part orange juice and 1 part pineapple juice).. All whilst debriefing with BizzyLizzy's latest!

This would be perfect for my grandchildren. They live in a hot western Queensland town and drinking lots of water is a necessity. Soda Stream would make it fun for them and easy for their health conscious Mum to make endlessly yummy drinks.

Raises my hand as a soda water addict! I love it with lime, but your recipe sounds delicious so will definitely try that soon.

I've wanted a Soda Stream for years. As a kid, back in the 70s, our neighbours across the street had one and we'd all line up in their kitchen while the mum dolled out fizzy drinks of all flavours. Great summer memories :)

My Sodastream Play

HAMLET:
To stream or not to stream, carbonation is the question?
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to sup from
The effervescence of delicious fortune,
Or to suffer through a sea of flatness,
And with bubbles I could end them? To fizz: to fizz; Some more.

The very cool SodaStream Play Drinks Maker deserves to be seen on a kitchen bench in Redcliffe, providing sparkling drinks to be consumed on a balcony overlooking the equally sparkling sea. Coupled with mango, pineapple, lychee and other luscious tropical fruits, it would make for perfect summer entertaining. Please, please!
