On his latest overseas adventure, Luke Nguyen's France, which begins on Thursday, 24 April at 7:30pm on SBS ONE, celebrated chef Luke Nguyen ventures out of Asia and into France — the culinary wonderland that shaped both his ancestral home, Vietnam, and the lives of so many in his family. Viewers experience a whole new world of French Vietnamese fusion food, as Luke travels across France creating dishes that boast the richness of Gallic tradition with a fresh, modern Asian twist. Luke Nguyen’s France begins in the heart of Paris, where Luke discovers Parisians’ passion for food, decadence and tradition. Walking the streets of the beautiful capital, Luke explores a food market that was established in 1615, cooks with his Vietnamese French cousin, meets a traditional Parisian butcher, says hello to French bees and tastes sweet honey from rooftop hives, and indulges in three courses of soufflé. Luke also sets up a kitchen on his friend’s rooftop and cooks pot-au-feu, which he discovers is the origin for the Vietnamese iconic staple, pho. Working with an artisan baker, Luke tries his hand at crafting a true French baguette, and cooks a seasonal asparagus dish with a French-Italian chef in the childhood garden of King Louis XVI. As you'll discover by watching the trailer, Luke Nguyen’s France is beautiful, stylish and colourful. Over ten delicious half-hour episodes Luke circumnavigates the country, meets charming local characters, and unearths a side to the French food culture and lifestyle that has rarely been seen on television. From Paris to Strasbourg, the dewy mountains of the Franche-Comté near the Swiss border to the gastronomic capital Lyon, Marseille to Nice, Biarritz to the Île d'Oléron off the Atlantic Coast, and finally to Brittany’s St Malo. Following its premiere on SBS ONE, each episode of Luke Nguyen’s France will be available on iTunes and Googleplay. All episodes will be available online at http://www.sbs.com.au/food/luke-nguyens-france And the full series will be available on Blu-ray and DVD from June 2014. Book your seats on the sofa now! Thanks for the heads up Lizzy. I would have missed this otherwise. Vietnam is high on my travel list, as is a slow meander through the south of France. Combining the two will be interesting.

I've read that about pot au feu being related to pho and I can see why. Isn't it funny how each dish evolved over time! :D

Interesting, huh Lorraine : ) 15/4/2014 03:41:30 pm
Sounds like fun! I'm not sure if this will air on US TV (I don't have any of the cable cooking channels, so I'm woefully uninformed -- just not a TV watcher), but I'll bet it will be available steaming on that www thingy. ;-)

OK John - I am absolutely hopeless in anything which spells IT! - But try 'SBS food' [you may have to add the 'au bit'!! and see what you may get! This is not cable/paid for TV but legitimate streaming. T'is a wonderland here - I think it will translate across the Pond!! Good Luck!!

Yes! Yes! Yes! My very favourite world food personality in an area I did not quite expect him [stupid me!!!]. I honestly do not know anyone who presents 'items food' in such a fun but intelligent way as he does. I am hugely sorry I missed his personal tours ~ friends who had the chance were treated to a wonderland in Vietnam they never expected! So disconnect the phone, pretend you are not at home, do not accept invitations for the night and get ready to enjoy!!! Thank you, Liz!!!!

Eha, Luke might do more tours in the future. Are you a subscriber to the Red Lantern newsletter? Enjoy the show xox 15/4/2014 06:15:17 pm
I'm not used to seeing Luke all rugged up - he's usually in Vietnam where it's so hot he's just wearing a T-shirt. I haven't re-tuned my TV since we went digital - it's just another job I keep putting off. And it means I can't watch SBS. I'll have to get onto it so I can see the fusion of French and Vietnamese xx

Darling Charlie - How can you live without 'Insight' and 'Dateline' to begin with? Horses for courses, but SBS is 70% of my watching time :) ! Just press 'menu' on your handset, and then it says 'retune' or 'channels' or . . . takes all of 90 seconds max!!!!!! Honest!!!!!!

I'm not really a TV watcher, so missed this bad boy all together. Will have to hunt down some DVD action. I've never been to France or Vietnam. But both are on the bucket list and I love me some French and Vietnamese food. One of my besties is Viet and cooks me wonderful tasty traditional foods, that counts right?
Lizzy

Anna, that sounds interesting! And, yes, that counts... watch this space about news of the DVDs on the series. I may even do a giveaway! 17/4/2014 01:32:05 pm
We have fond memories of several months spent in France in a variety of lesser populated regions and travelled paths. I loved St Malo as it's also the springboard for Jersey. After seeing your tweet yesterday, I've bookmarked this one.
