Ten insanely good bacon recipes - #baconweek

#baconweek celebrates this beloved ingredient
'Mmmm. Move over, eggs. Bacon just got a new best friend – fudge.' – Homer Simpson

Australian Bacon Week runs from 21-27 June and this is when chefs, home cooks and bacon aficionados, like Homer the cartoon character, celebrate their beloved ingredient (with genuine apologies to my veg friends).

To help you join the partee my friends, I bring you ten insanely good bacon recipes from around the globe. Whether you think of them as unique, quirky, epic, amazing, or plain crazy – these bacon creations are bound to make your mouth water and your mind boggle.
  1. Heston Blumenthal's bacon and egg ice cream
  2. Bourbon bacon jam from Cravings of a Lunatic
  3. Bacon and pecan cheesecake
  4. Bacon roses from Not Quite Nigella
  5. Chocolate cupcakes with bacon by Cleverly Inspired
  6. Candied tequila bacon from Bacon Babe
  7. Grilled bacon and banana on baguette by yours truly
  8. Brown butter candied bacon ice cream from Bacon Scotch
  9. Chocolate covered bacon with fleur de sel from Food Babbles
  10. And lastly, something less whacky, but delicious nonetheless, little bacon and egg pies

Mitchie Pork Stars with Pialligo Estate short cuts - Australia's best bacon

Seriously though, Bacon Week is an initiative to celebrate Australian bacon and draw attention to the competition it faces from imported product. While bacon remains a key ingredient for lazy Sunday breakfasts and menu favourites, more than two thirds of the bacon sold in Australia is made from imported, subsidised pork. Not a good thing. Hence, Aussie consumers are encouraged to support Australian #baconweek, adding Aussie bacon to their menus and purchasing product that has the PorkMark or words “Product of Australia”. Tell me dear readers, are you a bacon fancier, too? What's the most unique way that you've enjoyed it? Do tell.
