Long time readers of Good Things will know that yours truly is a city-girl. I was born and bred in Canberra, Australia and have lived here all of my life and absolutely love it. And yet there deep down inside there's always been a wee yearning for a taste of the rural life. As good as that sounds, I do ask myself how I'd go with a tree change. Heck, I break out in hives from head to foot at the mere sight of a horse. I love cows but am also just a little daunted by their size. And my hay fever would get in the way of any crop farming outdoors in the dusty Australian landscape. That said, I do so greatly appreciate farmers and farming, a little like ABC Landline's wonderful journalist, Pip Courtney, who loves everything to do with rural life but once told me (via Twitter) that she's not a country lass either.

Our planet and the creatures that we share it with are nothing short of awesome and there are many good things that we should all endeavour to see at least once in our lives. I have a bucket list that includes whales, gorillas and sharks. How about you? With today's busy lifestyles, those delicious weekend getaways we so enjoy can find themselves pushed right to the very back of the back burner. And yet there is so much to explore on our doorstep, if only we can make some time. This year's harvest of Australian macadamias is almost finished and the season has been a cracker, so make sure you pop some Aussie macadamias into the market basket when you go shopping this weekend. Spring is perhaps the most beautiful of the four seasons that we enjoy here in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. Perhaps as a celebration of sunshine and warmer days, there are festivals and events galore — including Floriade and Nightfest, the Canberra International Film Festival, The Canberra Latin Dance Festival, Tidbinbilla Extravaganza, as well as — perhaps one of my absolute favourites — the Thai Food and Cultural Festival, which is held at Sala Thai on the grounds of the Royal Thai Embassy. Among the gems in my library of cookery books is a 1970 edition of The Colonial Cookbook, which is an abridged version of the first Australian cookbook, The English and Australian Cookery Book: Cooking for the Many as well as the 'Upper Ten Thousand, which was written by 'An Australian Artistologist', Edward Abbott and published in 1864. Floriade, Canberra’s world-class floral extravaganza, returns to Commonwealth Park for its 27th year in September, promising another fantastic program of events inspired by the 2014 theme: Passion. In addition to the outstanding flower displays, visitors to Australia’s largest celebration of spring can pick up gardening tips from experts; learn to recognise the different spice and herb profiles in wine and food; listen to inspiring musical performances; enjoy delicious culinary demonstrations by world-renowned chefs; and keep the youngters entertained with a fun line-up of activities. The 2014 Canberra & Capital Region Truffle Festival begins on 21 June and I'm absolutely delighted to partner once again with Anne and Denzil Sturgiss from Tarago Truffles who have generously offered readers of Good Things the opportunity to WIN a truffle hunt for two during this year's season. Being one of the most versatile foods, mushrooms can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I will often add handful of mushroom morsels into a dish, for not only are they delicious, they also provide a rich source of antioxidants, are low in kilojoules, and contain a range of essential vitamins and minerals. 'Oysters are the most tender and delicate of all seafoods. They stay in bed all day and night. They never work or take exercise, are stupendous drinkers, and wait for their meals to come to them.' |
