'There is a child inside each of us, who only comes out in front of the person we are most comfortable with.' This quote, by 'unknown', certainly rings true in my own life. If there's one thing that will bring out the inner child in me, and my beloved Peter, it's a day out at the Royal Canberra Show.

Wow Canberra, you are completely taking my breath away! I was born in this beautiful city in 1958, have lived here all my life and now feel as though my baby has come of age – certainly in terms of food, wine and spectacular events! Australians know how to celebrate around food and wine, particularly as we are blessed with some of the finest produce in the world. Throughout the year, there are food and wine events held in cities and towns across Australia — some are more low key than others, but all capture the spirit of indulgence in good things food and wine. Oh, how I love this time of the year! Here we are zooming through January, and I know that many of you are still catching your breath after the festive season. Yet there is still cause for celebration. Australia Day falls on January 26, and this is followed by the beginning of the apple harvest in our local orchards. It's mid November (already!) and at this time of the year my thoughts turn to cleaning up the barbecue to get ready for cooking and entertaining outdoors. I'm also starting to think about menus for various al fresco events, as well as gifts for food-loving family and friends. Enter, Ross Dobson's King of the Grill. There's a lot to be said for 'good old country hospitality', particularly in Australian towns such as Young in New South Wales, which is currently gearing up for the 65th National Cherry Festival. South Australian journalist, rural storyteller and writer, Liz Harfull, says she has what is possibly one of the best jobs in the world. Indeed, I feel more than a little envious when I learn that she has spent the last four years travelling around, visiting several of Australia's country and royal shows. It was all hands on deck in the bustling kitchen at Nomad in Sydney's Surry Hills for the #goodfoodmonth literary lunch with esteemed chef, Yotam Ottolenghi. Dessert legend Christine Manfield, and Somer Sivrioglu from Effendy were there to assist Ottolenghi, along with with Ramael Scully, head chef at Ottolenghi, and Nomad's Nathan Sasi and his team. Lately, life at the Blue House has been deliciously interesting, if not just a little bit busy. We're settling into our retirement and making the most of each and every day. Of course, there's the mundane of daily life (minor illness, keeping fit, dieting, and so on), but in between that we've managed to squeeze in a bunch of outings and a few short getaways, too. Strolling around the picturesque village of Berrima in New South Wales recently, Peter and discovered a delicious and quirky larder door, tucked away at the bottom of the stairs leading down from the main street. I'd like to introduce you to the store owners, chefs Veronica Stute and Justin Wells, a.k.a. Two Skinny Cooks. |
